I am Magpie started in late 2004 when a couple of people
thought that it would be a good thing to start a small night where people
who didn't necessarily play records out could play music that most people
might not have heard. Ideally in a situation that wasn't particularly intimidating
for those involved. The only rules as such would be that the music be of
interest and that each set last for only twenty minutes. We would make it
entirely clear that no experience with Djing was necessary and that no mixing
or deck trickery was expected. This, after all, wasn't going to be 'Wildstyle'
or anything..............
So we found ourselves a small room upstairs in a pub in central Brighton
where we could host this thing and in late 2004 we had the first
I am Magpie. It went well, people came along and a few people we knew
played some music. It was just as varied as we hoped and that has remained
consistent. Over the months we've seen sets consisting of electronica, rockabilly,
hip-hop, rock-steady, delta blues, ska, country, indie, punk and varying
degrees of all of the above. We've had sets that have attempted to cram
as many variants of music as possible into twenty minutes and others that
remain planned and generically constant.
I am Magpie falls on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month
upstairs at Mrs Fitzherbert's on 25 New Road, Brighton
from 8-11pm and entry is free. If you are at all interested in playing
some records feel free to contact us and give
us an idea of the sort of thing you'd like to play. Remembering of course
that the night is based on music not mixing, you will not be expected
to take anyone on a musical journey of any kind. It is also quite likely
that euphoric trance will probably not be encouraged. Our only request
is that you stop playing when we ask you to stop. Which will be after
twenty minutes. 'Till then............
